Just arrived this morning. Incredible construction and image quality, sharp @ 3.5 for any distance, superior to any CZ 100mm (in my opinion)

Now you can see why it's so sought after - this is without doubt a Yashica triumph of mechanical and optical engineering.
I would have to disagree with you on the Zeiss 100 2.8 macro only because it has a native 1:1 ratio and the beautiful Yashi needs 2 extension tubes to achieve the same effect. But in terms of sharpness, it is as good as, if not better, than the Macro-Planar. The only lenses that I have used which outperform the 100 f3.5 are the Contax 645 Zeiss Macro (genuinely awesome!) and another Yashica great - the Yashinon Tomioka 60 f2.8 - which is un-frakking-believable for its sharpness and build quality, even after 45 years.
Enjoy your lens!

Looks very good indeed, I'm not a macro guy but I just bought one of these for a decent price and am now looking forward to being able to use it for general photography as well!

I had the same surprise with 55 f4 macro. Also a good performer for all kind of photos.

I managed to get a couple of shots done with my copy at the weekend and it did well. It stands up to the Sony A7r irresolution terms. It perhaps doesn't quite have the 'bite' of the other lens I was testing that day (a long sought-after-for-a-sensible-price Zeiss 35mm PC) but it's certainly no slouch. The photo below is of Hastings pier and, if you click through to flick the full sized image is there and there is good detail on the construction worker hanging off the edge.

Glad to see you're having fun with the macro lens - all too often people forget they're pretty good performers for more general photography.
Well done on getting hold of the 35mm PC lens - it's a great performer and as you are using a full frame DSLR, no problems with vignetting when moving the shift settings...and very sharp too! It's one of my favourites and is built to last - I've had mine since the 1980s and it's as mechanically tight now as when manufactured; typical West German Zeiss build quality!

I've now got a couple of little questions on the ML100/3.5;
1. Is there a dedicated extension tube to get it up to 1:1? 2. Is there a dedicated hood, as I suspect it may help for walk around shooting?
PS the PC-Distagon really is everything I'd hoped and a noticeable improvement on the Olympus lens it has replaced.

No - there is no single extension tube - you need to use Yashica or Contax Extension Tubes 2 & 3 (20mm & 27mm) which as you can imagine considerably extends the lens from the camera. For comparison, the ML 55 2.8 only requires the 27mm for 1:1.
2. Yes - there is a dedicated hood; unfortunately it is quite rare and prices are going sky-high. You need the Yashica 57mm slip-on - they made a standard, rectangular version (very expensive - typically about 60 Euros) and there was also a round version - much less easy to find but today much cheaper - it was made for a different lens but does the job equally well.
Quite right about the PC-Distagon's superior qualities!

Carl Zeiss 100mm f/3.5 Sonnar. Small, lightweight and pretty good quality.

It's delightful piccie.
The lens is an oddball for the Contax Zeiss series; it was a commercial failure and ended up being heavily discounted by retailers.
Open-wide it's not the sharpest (though it shows superb contrast) but from f5.6-11 it's a very good performer indeed. I think it fell into a 'no man's land' within the Contax range as, being a short telephoto, many people already had an 85mm or 135mm, both of which were faster and sharper in all versions, so why bother with a 100mm? Zeiss had already produced the outstanding f2 version and a dedicated macro lens in that focal length but with cameras getting smaller and lighter, Zeiss made the decision that a cheap, lightweight lens would find a market - they were wrong. However, they've sort of had the last laugh as it's become increasingly popular since production ceased. Prices became very steep and only now are beginning to slip back to better reflect it's position within the Zeiss Contax pantheon of glass.
I used one occasionally but never bought one; I always preferred the f2 lens - infinitely sharper and a better build quality (it needed to be with that extra weight and floating element!) - and the extra speed wide-open, creating a more shallow dof, made it perfectly acceptable for portraiture under natural lighting. It now has a very strong following and, being compact, is ideally suited to today's DSLRs and CSCs; only yesterday I got into conversation with a charming young lady who was sporting the natty little lens on her Fuji X-Pro. She loves it and was kind enough to show me some of the images - they were impressive. That was enough to persuade me to consider buying one, if the prices realign more closely with those for the 135mm f2.8, as it takes little space in a bag and is unobtrusive enough for street photography. Your delightful photo adds further weight to the argument in favour of the little Sonnar.

The Zeiss 100/3.5 is one of the first Zeiss lenses I bought because I had the chance to get it cheaply. I tried a few shots with it and have no real complaints about its performance. It's biggest draw back and why I sold it was that it's a 100mm... I never really enjoyed this focal length always preferring an 85 or 135, going back to my Canon FD days where I breifly tried their 100/2.8. Incidentally, if anyone does like 100mm lenses Ffordes have a couple at £179 which I think is reasonable for this lens.

I’ve just received a very nice copy of the ML100/3.5 macro. Has anyone compared it to the Sonnar Zeiss? I don’t really need both particularly as I also use a Tamron 90/2.5 SP. I do like the 100mm focal length as it’s clearly longer than 85 without the bulk of the Sonnar 135.
