I like down to earth thoughts of Jay about photography. So far I recommend the following books: On looking at photographs: A practical guide by David Hurn, Bill Jay On Being a Photographer: A Practical Guide. by Bill Jay Share your favorite books with us

I have to say, I enjoyed the conversation in Bill Jay's 'On Being a Photographer'. Two legends of the business talking about taking photographs - not focusing on technology but the philosophy and practicalities of producing great images. Very refreshing not having to wade through endless pages talking f-stops, film types or pixel counts; just photography for the sake of taking photographs...

I always enjoyed Bill Jay's column in "Lenswork;" reminiscent to me of David Vestal when he wrote for Photo Techniques. I really miss that magazine (the older versions) and his column.
