My third one came in the mail today. I wanted two, so in case I was doing an event, I could have both cams with different range zooms on them. Well, the second one I got is a bit iffy, so I kept my eyes open for another.
At first glance I thought the latest one was jammed up, because the shutter button would not depress, and the winder wouldn't advance. Then I checked the Slow Release. It had been halfway wound, and the lever put back in the upright position. I wound it on the rest of the way, and released the shutter, with everything working now as it should. The DSB 50/1.9 is clean, but there is some oil on one of the aperture blades. Still, it's pretty snappy. The ERC looks to be generic, as there are no markings on it, and it's in decent shape for its age.
I really need to get me some more ML lenses. Oh well, one more truck payment to go.

I have three DSB 50/1.9 lenses, and all three have oily apertures. I had a 28mm DSB that also had oily blades. But the functionality was not hindered on any of them. It must be a DSB thing.

I had one, Mike, that someone must have thought it was a quart low, and decided to add some more. It has to be the type of lube they used on the focus helical breaking down over the years. At least it's not like the old Bayer green cement on an Agfa. PF

At least it's not like the old Bayer green cement on an Agfa. PF The dreaded green cement, I remember it well! Slightly off topic, but I once bought an old Agfa folder on EBay, it was the Billy Compur, for which I paid about £24 (I'm in the UK). The Seller had lied outrageously about its condition. Far from being 'optically perfect', the lens was so encrusted with white hinge it would not pass a single photon. Nor could it have been 'tested with film', because the shutter was jammed, and the lens would not turn because it was seized solid with the green cement that the Agfa lube turned to. I figured it would be a lot of hassle trying to get a full refund out of him, so I decided to have a go at cleaning and fixing it myself, even though I'm not gifted in hand crafting like my brother. I managed to free the lens, which was very tricky, as it needed a lot of patience, organic solvent, and some brute force. Eventually I got all the green gunge out of the threads using wooden toothpicks and alcohol, and re-lubed it with silicon grease, cleaned the lens surfaces which came up beautifully, stripped down the shutter and freed it, and put it back together. The focussing was then light yet beautifully damped. Cleaned up the bodywork, then tested it with film. Cracking results! The lens was a Solinar, which is a Tessar design, still a good design after all these years. In a nice epilogue, I sold it later on EBay, where in a last minute bidding frenzy, it fetched four times what I'd paid for it.

I've just received a working FX-2 with the 50mm DSB f1.9. This copy has a plastic tip to the advance lever whereas another one I tried but had to return because of damage to the lens mount had a fully metal advance lever. I wasn't able to do a side by side comparison but the metal winder lever camera seemed to have a slight smoother action compared to the plastic tip variety.
The FX2 is a decent size, not as weighty as an RTSii but well balanced. I like the focusing screen - more microprisms and no split image. I can see that I will inevitably leave the camera's meter on and drain the batteries. I'm always doing that with my Konica Autorex which has an on/off lever
My main reason for trying an FX2 is that I find the winder on the FX3 and FX3 Super 2000 seem pretty crude and I have concerns about their reliability. These concerns may be totally unfounded but I'm trying to prepare myself for the day that my electronic Contax cameras fail. I've a fair number of Contax bodies so that day may be some way off yet. ...I hope !!

Of the FX models I have from start to finish of the series, none have a metal only advance lever. I suspect that someone attempted a repair and replaced the original with something from another model, or even another make. The last ones to have solid metal levers were probably the TL series. The AX and FFT's had plastic tips, and once the FR and FX lines started, they made changes to shapes or gearing from then on for any that had manual winding, and everything had partial or full plastic coverings.

Ah.,, that makes sense given the damage elsewhere on this camera.

I have the original black one, it was the #1 of the C/Y Series from Yashica, the FX-1, starting from 1975. Since the Yashica TL Electro X and Electro AX have been around from ca. 66-68 up to 1973 (TL X), the FX-1 later came to life, with the new Contax Yashica Bajonet Mount. I like the FX-1 much, but it's hefty weight - and especially the idiocratic battery place, whereas ordinary the film rewind knob/spool is. To be honest, i never shot it with Film & battery, because that mechanism looks like to be way fragile for me. I don't want to break it. It sits only into the drawer. camera-wiki.org/wiki/Yashica_FX-1
