Hi Folks,
I have just received a lovely DSB 50 f1.9 lens attached to a working FRII and when I entered their details into my inventory I was surprised at the camera's serial number.
I just checked all the FRIIs showing on eBay here in the UK and, like all my current ones, they have 6-digit numbers but today's arrival has an 8-digit number. Now, Yashica FR1s and FRIIs used 6 digits while the FR used 8, so I can't help wondering if at some stage, Yashica exhausted its supply of the 6 digit base-plates and had to revert to the ones intended for the FR. I could certainly see a situation in which the sales of the FR1 and FRII outstripped those of the earlier FR, leaving a large number of base-plates which could be used for the later models. Other than the serial numbers, all three versions of the FR-series bases are identical, so it would not be a problem.
Do any of you have a FRII (or perhaps an FR1) with an 8-digit serial number?

Since all the bottom body plates in the FR series are the same in dimensions and layout, it's certainly possible that one version's plate could get swapped out for another by a user. I just got a bundled pair of original FR's this past week - one silver / one black - and the bottom plates had been swapped for whatever reason. Strangely, this wasn't the only time that's happened.
I've been rather lax in my serial number housekeeping for some time, but of the ones that are out and within reach, the FR's have 8 numbers and the FRI's and FRII's have 6. I picked up one FX-2 by mistake and noticed that it had no serial numbers on the base plate at all, but they're stamped on the top-right and back of the top cap... so not all of the early C/Y body types had the same placement and prone to the easily switchable serial number possibilities.
