Contax provided a number of system cases over the years from the original leather Real Time System case of the 1970s to the eye-wateringly expensive rip-stop nylon cases for the Contax 645.
Among the many cases is the beautiful metal case shown below with its brushed metal finish designed for the G-Series but also capable of housing most Contax 35mm SLRs or compact cameras. But in all the time that it's had a G-2, a few lenses and a flash tucked into its deep foam protection, I never thought that the foam in the lid was removable. But in accidentally snagging it and pulling it partially out of the case, it exposed the two, expandable document holders and the three pen holders you can see on the right.
Contax G-System Metal Case
All that time and I had no idea. In the early days, it would have been ideal for carrying the user manuals until one became confident with the pleasing rangefinder. Dumb or what - but a pleasant surprise!
One of the benefits of this case is that it is quite slim - but still deep enough for an SLR, a couple of lenses and perhaps a flash. In a much earlier Accessories thread, you can see the original leather RTS System Case which actually had three lens mounts built into the fabric of the case which was a very good idea - no lenses rattling around when you're hiking. But it's bulky and very heavy - the quality of the saddle leather is superb but it adds a lot of weight.
Below you can also see another RTS System Case from the 1970s - again, beautifully made and at the time, eye-wateringly expensive. But it too is quite deep; the G-Series case, while not having quite the same capacity as both of the aforementioned cases, being more slim and with no abrupt corners is much easier to carry (there is a shoulder strap too). The butterscotch-coloured leather on the Contax-Zeiss RTS case is a delight to behold, as is the hand-stitching BUT it was not something I wished to carry in bad weather. I wish the G-Series one had been available 20 years earlier.
