I was checking on a few details concerning the Electro series and had my inventory open on one screen and the history of the models on the other and spotted a glaring omission: I had failed to acquire a GL. It arrived this morning, along with a NIB Contax 137MA, and I can say that I'm already a fan. Yashica Electro 35 GL Dating from 1973/4, it has that lovely build quality of the classic Electro 35 series and a luxurious feel when you handle it. It was not around for long as the move was on to create more compact models and the delightful, little GX quickly followed. What for me causes a preference for this Electro 35 model is the wider, 40mm f1.7 Color-Yashinon DX lens instead of the usual 45mm version and the ability to extend the film speed up to 1600ASA instead of the earlier 500 or 1000ASA. After inserting a new adapter and battery, the camera proved to be in full working order. The only thing left to do before putting a film through it is to replace the light seals. I may also look for a Auto ES-220 flash which was dedicated to the GL.

I feel like the GL was the perfectly proportioned Electro 35 model. It just felt much better to handle than the GS/GT versions. With the new meter placement within the filter mount it was much simpler to use with filters as you didn't have to make any compensating adjustments. Good luck on finding an Auto ES-220. I never did, and I looked for a long time.
