Got this lens in for repair today. Haven't seen one with such a high serial before. Is it unusual? Maybe a replacement dress ring? It's an MMJ.

Hello @peterr
It is most unusual.
Typically, MM versions run from about 6800000 to around 830000 with a little leeway either side. Even 50 1.4 lenses starting in the 810000 range are rare as they were among the last to be manufactured. You have quite an unusual lens there - nice one!
I have seen a couple with numbers that run to 8 digits; indeed there's one on Ebay right now with a number: 15177394 Both it and your number could well suggest that the bezels have been replaced but the only way to know for sure would be to have the lens with its original box and compare the numbers.

My own 50/1.4 MM has a high serial like that. I was aware of 9xxxxxx and 101xxxxx serials and waited for one as higher generally means newer, so more likely to be less used. They do crop up reasonably often as a few came up before one hit my budget.

This doesn't have the appearance of a late example but difficult to judge the age as it's been well used and abused. Has been attached to a camera that was dropped at some point and had a bent bayonet. Also the aperture ring was out of shape and binding. It also has significant haze in the doublet.

It is interesting to know that 8-digit 50mm f1.4 MM lenses are cropping up reasonably often; I was unaware of that.
If there are quite a lot out there, it suggest that the replacement bezel idea is probably wrong. Unfortunately, Zeiss' numbering system is much less transparent than Yashica's as the latter ascribed specific groups of numbers to specific lenses (until we hit very late production by Cosina). With a few notable exceptions (such as the Anniversary lenses and the big Mirotars) Zeiss appear to have used a simple additive system which is why groups of similar, even sequential, serial numbers can be ascribed to completely different lenses.
The appearance of these very high numbered Planars would suggest that there had been a hiatus in their production and then later a rush to clear the remaining stock which would have resulted in what would seem to be most unusual numbers for these lenses. But I'm afraid that's mere speculation.

Something I had forgotten but may be relevant, these lenses don't have separate dress rings with the serial. The ring is part of the front section of the lens which comes off in one piece. So if the front of the lens had to be replaced, perhaps due to a dented filter ring, the serial number would change.
