Maybe a stupid question... I've recently bought a 270 AF, and (too late...) I noticed that the cover for the Supplementary Light/Self Timer Led is missing. I see that is a semi-transaparent red piece of plastic that covers the sensor. The question is: can this affect the quality of AF system? Is strongly reccomended to find a spare part (where...) or there's no problem anyway? Thank you for your help!

I'm no expert but I'm sure someone here can provide you with a definitive answer. As far as I understand things, as your 270AF uses TTL phase difference detection, I doubt that the absence of the red filter will make much difference. As long as the subject has enough light on it or offers good contrast, the AF should lock on. Red is often used because it's less obtrusive than white light. As for finding spare parts, this may be a big problem. Mark Hama in the US may have some and he may be able to repair your camera but it's likely to prove quite costly. Your best bet if you feel the need to replace the missing part is to find a damaged camera (it should cost very little) and use it as a donor if you feel confident about disassembling both bodies and then re-assembling your 270AF.

As I understand it, phase detection relies on an internal sensor and 'reads' visible light - and as far as I know, it's agnostic to what color it sees. The red transparent cover is likely to be more acceptable for viewing by a human subject than a bright white light, and it's less intrusive for a self-timer indicator. I'd also expect that there might be a technical advantage in focusing the narrowness of the light's spectrum towards red to speed up the auto focus circuit's 'hunt', but I doubt it's required. As far as repairs go, you might find it far easier to watch for pieces of broken automotive tail lights on a roadway to get a free raw substitute to shape as a replacement. The 270AF (aka, 230AF Super) will probably show up in lower numbers, whether working or not, than the 230AF. Prices won't be overly high, but they won't be free like tail light pieces. :) EDIT to add: As long as your camera completes the autofocus cycle and gives a confirmation beep when it locks, it's unlikely a red lens will be required for operation. All my bodies have them, so I can't test that for sure, but it stands to reason that if it actually completes the lock, it might only be a comfort to vision or aesthetic choice to replace a missing lens.
