If I have a Yashica 135mm ML lens, which Mutar (if any) should I use with it? Mutar 1 or 2?
I was asked the question but I've no idea. Thought someone here might have an opinion.

The official Zeiss pairing for the Sonnar 135mm 2.8 is the Mutar II, as the MI or MIII is noted as having physical limitations. I test fit a standard ML 135mm (not the 'C', compact version) with the MII, and it works fine for mechanical linkages, and a quick indoor test shot looks acceptable for sharpness and vignetting on the A7R's LCD viewer. My Yashica 2x is packed away at the moment so I can't offer a direct comparison to the other OEM model.

Thanks Randy. I wasn't aware there were any converters made by Yashica. I don't think I've ever seen one.

Thanks Randy. I wasn't aware there were any converters made by Yashica. I don't think I've ever seen one. Yashica made 2 versions of the YUS 2x teleconverter (single coating on the white version and multi-coating on the green, matching the DSB 50 1.9) as well as one which matched the ML series ( 2x Auto Tele Converter) which was a later addition to Yashica's range of lenses. As for the Mutars, the Mutar II cannot be used with the Yashica ML C or DSB versions of the 135mm but the Mutar I can be used with them all without issues of vignetting at small apertures.

Thanks Graham. Do you know if the Mutar ii can be used with the 200mm ML C?

Thanks Graham. Do you know if the Mutar ii can be used with the 200mm ML C? Sadly, no.

OK, thanks. I'll pass the information along to the person who was asking.

I dug out the Yashica 2x, and it works, as expected, on the standard 135 ML as well. It does have one significant and unexpected difference over the YUS and Mutar models... it's marked as 'Made in Hong Kong'. The green YUS I have may be multi coated -but- it doesn't appear to use AR (Anti-Reflective) coatings, but HR (Highly Reflective) instead.
The YUS 2x has less and lower baffling inside the upper mount to offer better depth clearance, but that may not be enough to offset the better optics and coatings of the others.
