Thanx chaps ... again, very good knowledge.
To me, ML series is the least desirable one. They could be 'better' according to sharpens / contrast but dof just to busy(having 28 and 50 1.7). dx/ds is where Yashica stand out from the rest for me.
and yes, my ml 1.4 is the spitting image of ds(m) 1.4, I'll check both to see the difference in results. However I was a bit disappointed with dsm 1.4 as is very glowy and soft till 5.6.
"(I'm not considering the MC 28mm as a true Yashica lens)" - which one is MC ? or its a type error ..
Cheers

No - the MC reference is not a typing error. A couple of Yashica 28mm f2.8 MC lenses have been sold but I think less than a dozen were made.
They were a prototype, compact version of a 28mm lens (49mm filter) with a macro capability - I have only seen one, which had a serial number of A00006 on the bezel; I think I may have posted a piccie of it somewhere in the Forum. There was a retailer in Austria trying to sell one for a crazy price - I have no idea as to its quality or manufacturer; for once, it does not look like a Cosina lens.

ok Biggles, thanx for your reply. Learned sth - again, Cheers Errrmm, oops! I had quite forgotten this other ML 28mm lens - a true ML C version. I can't recall where I found the photo but I uploaded it to my Flickr account some time ago and forgot all about it....
Yash ML C 28mm
Although I'm aware of the existence of a couple of the MC 28 lenses, this is the only example of the ML C I have seen.

Hi alexx,
Just for the sake of completeness, this was the mystery MC lens:
Yash 28mm MC Lens
I can't find it any longer so, despite the massive price being asked, someone must have bought it...

I can understand why someone might want to slap a huge price tag on a prototype for the sake of it's rarity - but - if the underlying lens was average at best...? It looks far too similar to a Chinar 28mm MC or the Chinon 28mm Macro (both Chinon) to think there's anything special inside. Kyocera seemed to be on a quest to find low budget replacements at the end, so unfortunately I wouldn't expect this would be any different from the earlier Cosina 'C' models. Rarity for the sake of the limited numbers alone shouldn't justify a high asking price. If it did, I've got a very rare Shinon Pigeon 35 I need to get on the auction block.

I've once had a Yashica ML 50/1.9c, "c" for Cosina, i'd say...and it was really worse than the others.

'and now for something completely different' (not!)
A DS 28 on 42 with lines / not diamonds - focus ring, thus a typical plane ds model (exterior),
is there a way to figure out the year of build, according to the ser.nr. (#120****)?
have 35 DS and I love it so I hope a 28 could be a good little brother (from the same daddy).
Cheers

Just a quick note to confirm that I've updated the listing to include the optical formula for the superb Yashica AF 60mm f2.8 Macro and added the fact that there is also a Kyocera-branded version that makes no reference to Yashica on it. The odd thing about the Kyocera AF 60mm f2.8 Macro is that it has an earlier serial number than any of my Yashica versions...

In that case, might it be possible that Yashica, and later on Kyocera, may not have based their modern (post-M42 era) serial numbers on Western dates, but some form of 'Showa years'? There was a change in 1989 as the start of the Heisei Era.... from Showa 64 to Heisei 1.

Here's another find -- for me, anyway -- as I update my subminiature enlarging lens list on the SUBCLUB at: www.subclub.org/darkroom/lenses.htmExcept for the 21mm f3.5 E-Yashinon DX on the Atoron ENLA, this might be the only enlarging lens that Yashica sold -- 40mm f3.5 -- but I have not checked that out. In any event, I assume it was made by Tomioka (Tomioka sold several enlarging lenses under the Tominon label), and it should be added to the lens list (along with the 21mm E-Yashinon) as this one is marked "YASHICA". It looks like a real winner for enlarging AND macro work. Details are at:

Hi xkaes
I'm annoyed that this lens only came to my attention today as one was being sold very recently and I had no idea. That's life...
Thank you for making me aware of it; there may be others here who knew of its existence but it was news to me. Looking at various serial numbers, they produced well over a thousand; interestingly, it's identical to Hoya's 40mm f3.5 enlarging lens.

Interesting, i've never seen a "ML c 28/2.8" Yashica, but these are cheapskate Cosina-based Designs (yes, and i am well aware, Cosina is producing Zeiss Lenses according to their Standards - the Zeiss Classical Lenses, means -was producing) at the Endphase of Production...The Yashica ML 50/1.9c is worse than the 50/1.7, 50/2 true ML, and the Yashica 135/2.8 "c" is also not that great. Personally, i do avoid these Lenses, i'd would only get them, if they're being dirt-cheap.
