It's taken a while to find an early version in reasonable condition, and now there's one to join it's later sibling, the 300mm C (Compact) model. In a topic on C/Y 300mm comparisons started several years ago by biggles3 , there's some comparison on results, but nothing on the origins of the 2 different ML versions... and I'm wondering if the 300mm may be the only one of the updated 'C' models that weren't made by 3rd party suppliers, and came from Yashica themselves.
Here's the half page from the ML dealer brochure from 1987. The title doesn't specify the details as belonging to the C version, but it's clearly showing in the photo, and from the shorter dimension for length.
I don't have anything showing the same details or optical diagram for the original model, but there are some obvious similarities that can't be dismissed outright. They both have the same elements and groupings in their optical formula, use the same filter threading, share the same minimum focus distance, and as Graham noted in the linked topic, there basically indistinguishable in how they render images and their core characteristics. There are some specs listed here on olypedia.de that give details to match those published in bits and pieces elsewhere, and there's also a lens diagram for the early model to compare to the C model, above. If anyone has anything from dealer workbooks or package inserts for the early model, it would be helpful to confirm the specs and fill in a few blanks on the maker side of it.
The spec sheets I do have for earlier lens models in the 300mm models under M42 mount, show some interesting details too...
300mm DX f/5.6: 5 elements in 4 groups, FoV: 8°10', f-stops: 5.6-22, filter: 58mm, Weight: 780 grams, minimum focus: 4.5m (also w/ tripod collar). The DX model does have some things that are fairly different, and those are even more evident if the Super Yashinon preset version is added into the chain.
I've just started testing the lenses to get a quick recap on Graham's results and what might have changed - if anything - but all indications from the original model are that there probably won't be any surprises.
