Seems the decision was based on the EPA's finding traces of some toxic chemical in the layers of the Fujichrome Velvia (big f-- surprise)... and another one bites the dust...
I'm sure the Europeans are soon to follow.

... and apparently you'll only have until Sept. 5th to process any you already own, before labs are forced to stop developing it. That's not a lot of time to recoup any investment pro photogs might already have in a fridge full. I can imagine there will be quite a few Canadian and Mexican labs that are going to see an uptick in volume after September for bulk buyers.
At least the Velvia 50 Provia 100F aren't affected by using the same chemicals, but I wonder if the prices will start to creep up.
