Here we have a piccie of two classic pieces of Yashica and Contax gear designed to allow the photographer to release the shutter remotely. Yashica's lovely clockwork self-timer just keeps on working and I still use it occasionally on various Yashica FX-3s and my Contax S2b. It is sitting atop the awesome Contax AC Control Box which was designed to take remote operation to a new level of sophistication with the Contax RTS. Yashica Contax Remote revolutionThe Contax box allows you to take shots at pre-selected intervals of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, or months although only to a maximum of 99 exposures. I used mine with the Contax RTS Fundus, the PMD and 250 Exposure Back to record processes that developed over time. You just had to remember to be ready to reset it after 99 exposures to start a second cycle if needed. As with the Yashica self-timer, it was also very useful in taking macro shots where any finger pressure on the shutter button could result in blurring of the final image. Of course, both Yashica and Contax had a variety of remote switches, IR Remote Controls and even Radio Control (though this was not for use in the US) for their cameras with electronic shutters but for anyone wishing to take multiple photos, the 'set-and-forget' sophistication of the Contax AC Control Box was something to behold back then - and it still is pretty impressive. Yashica Self-TimerA separate piccie of the indefatigable Yashica Self-timer and its case.
