Well, the auction winner on the DX wasn't me, but then, I wasn't bidding either. The owner of the 1000mm Reflex I referred to earlier still hasn't responded, and my experience when they don't (or won't) reply, is that there are major issues they prefer not to confirm. I'm not all that keen on making an offer based on the photos alone and the $355 USD asking price on a "Junk" lens. I suspect it may be way overpriced and underdescribed, and my gut tells me it has some or all of the filter issues dunksargent mentions. The photos are blurry enough that it's difficult to tell if the dark 'blotches' are reflections or desilvering on the mirror, and that would be a deal killer for me. I don't have the tools or materials to fix mirror issues. I took out a Zeiss 300mm f/4 Tele-Tessar and a Mutar II on the Fuji X-E3 to get a sense of what I could put together to get closer to the 1000mm distance using standard lenses. I still need to process everything for posting, but it's fairly apparent that pixel-peeping is not a good idea. I may need to pull things apart and go one step at a time to see if there's a weak link in the gear, or if it's the set of eyes behind it. I will say that it wasn't easy to get a clear sense of focus when the viewfinder was on the darker side, so that might be a combination of the above, and/or me not having the camera properly set up for what I'm trying to do. It might be worth trying a couple of different Mutar combinations too. I already know how sharp the 70-210 f/3.5 and the 80-200 are, and they may offer better results - just without the same reach. This is the one instance where crop sensor cameras can offer an advantage, and I also have an ulterior motive... there are several families of Peregrine Falcons that hunt in my neighborhood.

Well don't forget the Super Yashinon-R 800mm f8 (2/1 design). Sure it's huge, but there is also the later, smaller Tokina 800mm f8 -- exact same lens with two additional elements to make it a telephoto lens (4/2 design), and also sold under the Vivitar, Soligor, and other labels.

Portrait of friend TW using Yashica 1000/11 / Leica SL 601 ... TW was sitting in the shade in his garden ... camera/lens on a tripod approx 50 feet distant ... ISO 800 1/320sec f11 ... 2 seconds self-timer ... A 'technical exercise / experiment' with the 1000mm mirror lens BW dunk

That's nicely done and shows the lens to be a very fine piece of glass! Thank you for sharing this with us.

That's nicely done and shows the lens to be a very fine piece of glass! Thank you for sharing this with us. I can only add to that with another +1. It's also good to show that not every shot taken with a mirror lens is full of 'donut bokeh', as that seems to be a common misconception.

Thank you for the +ve comments. I'm also an astronomer and aware of mirror lenses' 'acclimation requirements' to reach ambient temperature and thus reduce internal thermals which if still present can degrade the image ... thus the lens was allowed at least 30 minutes to 'acclimate' before use. Later in the year the lens would have required a longer acclimation time if taken from a warm interior to a cold exterior location. I'm happy with the lens and looking forward to imaging some Peregrine Falcons nesting on a local church steeple.
