This is, in part, tied to the thread on the DSB 75-200mm lens. I'll do this as a running commentary type of thread, since there's lots of streets and even alleys to follow, and it may take more than a few searches to get to some meaty details.
Universal Optical Industries Ltd. of Hong Kong reportedly had some type of relationship with producing something for the Holga line of cameras. Referenced here: industrialhistoryhk.org/holga-cameras-hong-kong-informationphotos-needed/
I've found one site that describes 4 shipments (as 3 separate Bills of Lading for product delivery) to Kyocera companies in the US from Universal in HK. They certainly don't seem to describe optical products of any type, and they're going to divisions that make no sense for either the commodity they describe, or some optical product if the commodity type was mislabeled (creatively, or by some error), or for the product if it was labeled correctly. I have no idea why Universal would be sending ceramic knives to Kyocera's US tooling and engineering division! Click on each BOL link for details, here: panjiva.com/Universal-Optical-Industries-Ltd/1728222
-or- for the single optical goods shipment that was routed through Tele Vue Optics Inc (as the importer) on Universal's page here: www.importgenius.com/suppliers/universal-optical-industries-ltd -or- on Tele Vue's own page here for specific item details: www.importgenius.com/importers/tele-vue-optics-inc [Click on "SHIPMENTS" to view the BOL data on either of those pages]
If those last US based entries for Universal in HK's shipments are correct, then the only thing Kyocera got from them in 2020 were lens elements. I'd need a subscription to their shipping data service to get anything from earlier years.
There's a Universal Optical Industries in Lahore Pakistan, but they're makers of ophthalmic products and not camera gear.
Universal isn't currently found as a Kyocera subsidiary, division, or matching any manufacturing location. Kyocera Optec (a.k.a., Tomioka) is the only optical unit they show on their corporate site, here: global.kyocera.com/prdct/optec/location.html ... However, they are referenced in what is likely to be an outdated business directory listing, under "Principal Subsidiaries" here: www.referenceforbusiness.com/history2/57/Kyocera-Corporation.html
A recent 360 degree twist is that Universal's been renamed and repurposed in 2008, as Kyocera Logistics Co. Limited: webb-site.com/dbpub/orgdata.asp?p=167490
As part of the 'Company' listings on the outside cover of the Contax NX manual, Universal is indeed listed in name and address only, without any distinction on why they're included there. A copy of the manual, complete with printing/press markup, is here: pdfstream.manualsonline.com/6/6710f8b0-7ad1-4e3e-8790-17ff3771aaf0.pdf
I did find a few forum entries on other sites (here's one) that recommended them as a repair depot for Yashica and Contax gear in HK by members who'd actually used them, so if nothing else, they seem to have been a repair center during Kyocera's ownership period.
