Hi,
I have a Yashica FX-D Quartz that has fallen into my possession. The seller was open about the door catch issue and I was only after the lens anyway (Yashica ML 50mm f2 in VERY nice condition) so no big deal if I can't fix it but may as well try eh?
The electrics seems to work OK (exposure LEDs and beeps etc) and the battery compartment was nice and shiny and - overall - not in bad condition. The main thing is the door. The door release seems quite soft/spongey and the door will flip open at random as if something is not quite catching properly.
I've never done this before on any camera so it's a journey into the unknown. I've got the assembly diagram and there appear to be things called a 'lock plate spring' which sounds like a likely candidate so I'll look for that and see what's what.
Does anybody have any words of wisdom for me about how to start disassembly? I'm guessing I have to start from the top down?
thanks Barnsey

I know this might sound too simple, but look to see if there's any old skin/covering or glue gunk that got stuck somewhere and it's preventing the door from fully closing - or - it's stuck to, or inside of, the door catch mechanism. The way those covers deteriorate and peel, it wouldn't be the first time parts of it went somewhere it shouldn't.
Other than that, it's sometimes an issue of bent prongs, or they get 'squished' or deformed from being forced. Look at everything as it's visible before popping things open. It may save a lot of work if you jump too far too fast. Exclude all the logical options before jumping into the inards.
